Magnetic resonance angiography (MRI and MRA) is one of the newer techniques. It is a technically complicated imaging method which relies on powerful magnets to align water molecules in the body tissues. It is a painless and fairly rapid form of assessment especially on the latest machines, but is noisy and some patients feel hemmed in or claustrophobic by the procedure. It can be used to assess almost any artery in the body but has been found particularly useful in the assessment of carotid artery disease, as shown on the right. It is also good for assessing the renal (kidney) arteries. It does not require puncture of an artery and consequently is only useful in the diagnosis of disease and cannot be used to treat arterial problems. These next items need to be evaluated on a case by case basis before an MRI is attempted, some models are acceptable and others are not. We have a list and will request that you bring your implanted device's model number with you. If you are having a scan of the abdomen or pelvis, it is helpful not to eat or drink for three hours prior to your exam. All other exams have no restrictions on diet. Continue to take any medication you normally would take for that day. We encourage you to make one last trip the the rest room prior to going out to the scanner. This is so you won't have to stop and increase your scan time.

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machine creates an image of the body using a large magnet. You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. You will not feel the magnetic field, but you will hear some noise. It is important to remain very still during the scan. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and you will be able to speak to the MRI technologist the entire time. In the machine, do not wear: Jewelry. Metal Objects. Eyeglasses. Dental Pieces. Before the procedure, let the technologist know if you have a pacemaker, have had heart valves replaced, or have any metal in your body, including surgical staples, metal filings or permanent makeup. Also, let staff know if you have the tendency to become claustrophobic, have had a bullet wound or worked with metal (metal shavings risk). You should feel no discomfort from the tracer or the scan. You may also be given some medicine to help you stay quiet during the scan as well as some medication to reduce your bladder activity. You will then lie on a table that slides into a PET scanner. You may be lightly strapped in to help you hold still. It is important to remain very still during the scan. You will not feel the scan, but you will hear some noise as the scanner moves. The radioactivity of the tracer goes away quickly and you can be with your loved ones after the scan.
